What size light fixture?

What is the proper size of a light fixture?  This question arose recently with a new client.  A three foot wide fixture was placed in a small room and it looked out of place and awkward due to its large size. 

To determine the correct size (width) of a light fixture, measure the room dimensions on two sides together.  Next, change the total from feet to inches to get the approximate width. 

Also, keep in mind the finish, style and height of the fixture before purchasing.
