I contemplated writing this blog post for a few hours because I thought this topic may be too delicate to discuss. However, I soon came to my senses and realized that if I found it interesting then so would the readers.
American Standard has introduced ActiClean a self-cleaning toilet. I saw this item advertised in several trade magazines and watched several You Tube video on the subject. Per American Standard this toilet features an on board cleaning solution which is quickly released into the bowl and swirled in a fast vortex with a touch of a button. It offers a 10 minute deep clean and a 1 minute quick clean option and only uses 1.28 gallons of fresh water. The toilet comes with a clean curve rim, child lock and completely removable seat for easy cleaning.
All of these features sound really cool and the company videos looked very slick. Other videos with actual toilets installed in homes were more critical of the unit and suggest that it works best when used to keep the bathroom smelling fresh in between traditional manual cleanings.
In total, I believe that this is a great option if you need to replace a toilet and like the features. But keep in mind that the price can be double the cost of a traditional unit and currently the replacement cleaning solution cartilages must be purchased at a home improvement store or through American Standard’s web site.
