First Impressions White Kitchen
Are white kitchens out of style? That is one of the most loaded questions of 2020 in my world.
As a designer, I see white cabinets paired with white countertops everywhere. In fact, the photo above is my kitchen which I love. But for 2021 what is the newest design trend that is also cost effective? The answer to my first question is…yes and no. White kitchens will essentially never go out of style but in this recent decade there has been a huge explosion of white kitchens in new construction and remodels. And honestly they are kind of…boring.
So what are some solutions to beat a mundane white kitchen? The easiest answer is to change out your cabinets and countertops. However the average cost to remodel your kitchen is $35000, which is a lot of money. Instead, I suggest changing a few items that can make the most impact for a small amount of money.
First Impressions oversize light fixture
For example, if your light fixtures are dated then changing them is a wonderful way to renew your space. The photo above shows updated 16” light fixtures used in a recent project of mine in a farmhouse style kitchen. Gone are the mini light fixtures over counters and instead designers like me are adding large fixtures to make bigger impacts. In this home I deliberately chose a clear seeded glass fixture that also lets light show through it. Though large, it doesn’t overpower the space. Pairing these over the counter fixtures with a round metal orb pendant over the table created an open, airy, and bright space.
First Impressions Counter Stools
Next, if you have a kitchen island, think about updating your counter stools with a new color or style. Painting the stools or changing the covers is easy. In the kitchen above, I added bright orange/red stools to invigorate the space. Though this contemporary kitchen was gray and white, my clients wanted some pizazz. In this open concept home, I took inspiration from pillows in the living room. Also, over the adjacent dining table I added a modern European style round fixture with tiny sparkly bulbs in a matching chrome finish. And lastly, think about your knobs and pulls on your kitchen cabinets. I’m sure you’ve seen the trend in gold hardware but what about Brushed Copper – do you feel me swooning!!! A huge new trend for 2020 is white appliances with white cabinets and coordinating metallic or black pulls.
