If you’ve followed me for a while, you know I’m not shy about using paint to work a little magic. But one of my all-time favorite decorating hacks? Using a bold paint color, even over something “nice” like natural wood, to elevate and anchor a key feature in your home.
A while back, I was working with clients who had this massive, two-story fireplace wrapped in orangey wood paneling. It wasn’t awful, but it was definitely bossy, and not in a good way. The real gem of the fireplace was the granite surround: a swirl of earthy greens, golds, whites, and warm browns that deserved way more attention than it was getting.

From the moment I walked in, I knew what needed to happen. I pitched painting the entire wood surround in Sherwin-Williams Tricorn Black. Yes, black. The kind of choice that makes people pause and maybe panic a little. But here is the thing: that black paint didn’t just cover the wood, it transformed the entire vibe of the space. Suddenly, the granite came alive. Every fleck of color in that stone popped. And the fireplace? Total showstopper.

That one bold move set the tone for the rest of the design. We layered in modern black lighting, clean-lined furniture, and black-framed art to tie it all together. The home had leaned farmhouse before, but now it felt fresh, elevated, and personal, just what the client had been craving.
I recently shared this story with my friend and color expert Maria Killam for a feature on her blog all about unexpected decorating tips from designers. Maria has such a smart eye for color (her True Colour Expert™ system is a game-changer), so it was an honor to be included. If you’re curious about other fun, out-of-the-box decorating ideas, definitely check out her roundup. And hey, if you have a feature in your home that feels “fine” but not fabulous, let’s talk. Sometimes all it takes is a fearless paint choice and a fresh perspective to completely transform your space. I’m here to help you make those bold but right decisions that bring your story to life.
