One of my favorite parts of this job is seeing a room click into place. That moment when the colors, lighting, and textures come together and suddenly it just feels right. That’s exactly what happened with this dining room project in Chapel Hill last fall. And spoiler alert: it all started with finding the right paint color.
The Dilemma: “We want bold, but not too bold.”
When my client first reached out, she knew her dining room needed some love. The space had great bones. Classic molding, beautiful natural light, and a rich, warm wood floor, but it lacked personality. She wanted a deeper, dramatic color that would make the room feel special for hosting dinner parties and holidays, but she didn’t want it to feel too dark or overwhelming. We also had to work with some existing elements, like the dark wood furniture and the trim color, so choosing the right wall color meant thinking beyond just what looked pretty on a paint chip.

Where We Started: Testing, Taping, and Trusting the Process
This was very much a team effort. The project was for a married couple, and the husband was at every meeting, thoughtful, curious, and an integral part of the decision-making. I absolutely loved that. They both brought great ideas to the table and were equally invested in getting it just right.
came over with my paint kit and a whole lot of samples. We taped them up on the walls and let them sit there for a few days, checking them at different times of day and under different lighting. (Yes, I always recommend this step, it’s not just a designer quirk! Light changes everything.)We narrowed it down to a few moody, saturated shades, and eventually landed on Sherwin Williams Waterloo SW 9141 a gorgeous, deep blue with just enough warmth to play nicely with the wood tones and not go cold under artificial light. It gave the room the richness she wanted without feeling too formal or heavy.

Layering in the Finishing Touches
Of course, paint is just the beginning.
Once the walls were painted, we brought in new custom drapery panels with a soft, watercolor-inspired floral that added movement and softness to the space. We paired them with light-filtering honeycomb shades for privacy and a cozy glow.
And that chandelier? Total showstopper. We swapped out the old fixture for something with serious sparkle, a statement piece with faceted glass that reflects light beautifully across the room, especially in the evenings. It adds just the right bit of glamour without going over the top.
The Final Result: Warm, Welcoming, and Uniquely Her
Now, the dining room feels like it fits the rest of her home, but elevated. It’s dramatic but not stiff, classic but not boring. And most importantly, it feels like her.
Here’s a peek at the finished space (and yes, this is after photo lighting, just imagine how good it looks in person over a glass of wine and a candle or two!):

Every room has a story, and every great space starts with the right foundation.
In this case, that foundation was paint. Carefully chosen to complement the existing elements and create a whole mood. If you’re staring down a stack of paint chips or unsure where to begin, you don’t have to do it alone.
I love helping clients uncover the perfect palette for their homes, whether you’re doing a full-room refresh or just trying to find the right shade of blue that won’t go purple at night.
